Ways To Reboot Your Computer Explained

Another option is to reboot your computer in safe mode by clicking the F8 key as Windows is just starting up (to enter the Windows advanced options menu). Running the PC in safe mode reduces the number of services that are permitted to run so improve useful if there are problems with peripherals a virus is blocking your anti-virus application from doing a computer repair. Once the repairs are made, you can do a soft reboot and start the PC in regular mode once again.

Adaptive Intelligent Recovery and Swing Control Explained

Adaptive intelligent recovery and swing control are two functions found on good programmable thermostats. They are both very useful functions for reducing energy bills, protecting HVAC equipment and improving indoor comfort. This article will explain these two functions.

Adaptive intelligent recovery is found on Honeywell programmable thermostats and is often called ‘smart recovery’. The excellent Honeywell RTH8500D 7-Day Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat has smart recovery. It is a function which allows the Honeywell RTH8500D to track how long it takes to pre-heat or pre-cool a room during the changing seasons. It uses this information to start heating or cooling a room prior to the start of a programmed period. This means that if you set the thermostat to come on at 6pm and the room temperature to be 78 degrees; then at 6pm the room is exactly 78 degrees. This means you no don’t have to try and guess how long you should set the thermostat before you wake up or arrive home from work. It also means you avoid the temptation to put the thermostat on full because you are too hot or too cold. Gradual heating or cooling is much more energy efficient.

Secondly there is swing control. Honeywell programmable thermostats don’t have this function but Lux Products programmable thermostats do. Recommended are the Lux Products TX1500E (a 5-1-1 programmable thermostat) and the Lux Products TX9000TS (a 7-day programmable thermostat). Swing control allows you to set up a range within which your HVAC system does not respond to changes in temperature. Thus, if you have your Lux TX9000TS set for 78 degrees with a swing of 2 degrees then it will only turn on the heating if the temperature falls below 76 and will only cycle the air-con if the temperature rises beyond 80 degrees.

Trying to keep a room at an exact temperature can cause the furnace, air-con and other equipment to be continuously cycling. This prematurely wears out HVAC equipment. Having the room temperature modulate a degree or two does not noticeably change the comfort of the room and it saves you money.

Deciding which is more important smart response or swing control may depend on where you live. If you live in extreme conditions then swing control is more useful. Smart recovery is ideal for temperate areas with 4 seasons.

Troubleshooting Computer Freezes

Computer freezes can occur due to a large number of reasons and rarely provide you with the exception message you need to focus in on where the fault lies. This post runs through some of the most common causes and solutions to computer freeze issues.

Start with checking your hard drive is not running out of space. If it becomes too full then the virtual memory will struggle to expand and the operating system will be unable to do even basic operations. Free up extra hard drive space by moving large files and documents to an external storage device/CD and removing old unused programs.

Make sure your Windows registry file has not developed a fault. Registry corruption can occur due to viruses or simple application changes. This should be remedied using free computer scans (e.g. from the likes of Reimage) or by using a registry cleaner to automate the registry key repairs.

Use the task manager to check there are not too many programs running all at the one time. Your RAM and CPU will reach a bottleneck point once too many applications are running and will start to cause your computer freezing frequently. Scan your PC for viruses. It only takes one malware application or Trojan virus to be on your PC to lead to massive registry and OS program damage. Update your anti-virus software and scan all drives and memory devices.

Run a disk defragmentation utility if you haven’t done so in the past month. Data fragments on the disk can build up over time and gradually cause the operating system to struggle when accessing highly fragmented documents. A disk defragmenter will sequentially reorder data to reduce disk access times.
